When Asannagar Madan Mohan Tarkalankar College was established in 2007, the departments of History and Bengali were commenced with General courses and were upgraded to Honours courses in 2008. Teaching-learning had begun at the inception with the appointment of guest lecturers. Sri Nilendu Biswas joined the department in 2010 as the first full-time permanent professor. At about the same time, two guest lecturers, namely Sri Debashis Banerjee and Sri Sujan Sarkar left the department, being appointed elsewhere. A few months later, Smt. Mili Paul joined the department as a guest lecturer. Later, Sri Biman Tarafder, Sri Sukanta Biswas, Sri Narattom Biswas and Sri Partha Roychowdhury also joined in the same capacity. A new feather was added to the cap with the joining of Sri Partha Banerjee (M. Phil.) as a full-time and permanent member of faculty. At present, the department consists of two permanent full-time professors and three SACT lecturers. Numerous students of distinguished merit have graduated from the department in its decade-long history. Ujjwal Majumder ranked 2nd in University Examinations in 2011, followed by Narattom Biswas who topped and Sakil Biswas who stood third in 2012 - and the illustrious line of bright careers continues to the day.
